  • Bonjour Geraldine,

In 2012 I took my family to France to enjoy what I had experienced as a teenager in the 1980’s. After a few days in Paris, Evreux and a night at Le Mont, we found ourselves in the small town of Dinan ( We chose this town because it was near the ocean but fell in love with it so much we never made it to la plage). During our first excursion I am notified that everyone is hungry. Being the only french speaking person in the group and not feeling very secure in my ability, we found a restaurant that looked tourist friendly. Getting a table and ordering drinks was not a problem, then came my moment to shine…… I ordered everyones meal and was able to communicate who wanted what to eat and how they wanted it done, then finally it was time to order for me. I was so pleased with myself and happy that the waiter didn’t lift an eye with everything I said that I forgot where I was for a moment and ordered the “Four Seasons” pizza. The waiter snapped up the menus with a big smile at me and said “Quatre Saisons”! I slammed my head in my hands and cried “NO!” He just laughed at (with) me and told me my french was perfect up to that point and not to worry about it, that it was good that I try and to continue trying. Final note, the meal was great even if my face was still a little red while eating. 🙂

    • Congratulations Roger, if the waiter understood all your order, your French was indeed excellent!
Ahah, our brains are often traitors, switching back to our native language without notice. 🙂

  • Hi Geraldine

When I first arrived in France and my children were small and didn’t eat much, I asked for a couverture which really amused the waiter.

It’s not that funny but your video made me recall this incident.

    Regards
    Yvonne
