Today, we’ll be listening and repeating essential phrases and everyday sentences, as in those tape recordings that you might have used (before apps and everything.)
But here, I’ll be using sentences that French people actually use. They’re not slang or swear words! But they do use everyday informal grammar and pronunciation.
You just need to listen and repeat after me. It’s a great way to train your ear and your pronunciation without the pressure of actually talking to somebody!

1 - AVEC UNE VOISINE – With a neighbour
- Bonjour ! Vous allez bien ? Hello! How are you?
- Oh la la, quel temps ! Oh my, what weather!
- Vous pensez qu’il va neiger ? Do you think it’s going to snow?
- Qu’est-ce qu’il fait chaud ! It’s so hot!
- Vous habitez dans l’immeuble ? Do you live in the building?
- Je suis en vacances dans la région. I’m on vacation in the area.
- Je viens d’emménager. I’ve just moved in.
- Vous êtes ici depuis longtemps ? Have you been here long?
- Je suis Américaine. I’m American.
- Je viens d’Écosse. I’m from Scotland.
- C’est très joli ici. It’s very pretty here.
- Vous connaissez un bon resto dans le coin ? Do you know a good restaurant in the area?
- On va au musée cet après-midi, vous voulez venir ? We’re going to the museum this afternoon, would you like to come?
- Merci beaucoup ! Thank you very much!
- Bonne journée, au revoir ! Have a good day, goodbye!

2 - AU RESTAURANT – At the restaurant
- Bonjour ! On peut déjeuner ? Hello! Can we have lunch?
- Vous avez une table pour deux ? Do you have a table for two?
- On peut s’installer ? Can we sit down?
- C’est quoi le plat du jour ? What’s the dish of the day?
- Je vais prendre le plat du jour. I’ll have the dish of the day.
- Pour la cuisson, je préfère à point. For the cooking, I prefer medium.
- On va prendre un pichet de vin rouge. We’ll have a pitcher of red wine.
- Juste une carafe d’eau, merci. Just a carafe of water, thank you.
- La salade, c’est végétarien ? Is the salad vegetarian?
- On peut partager une entrée ? Can we share an appetizer?
- C’est possible d’enlever les lardons ? Is it possible to remove the bacon bits?
- C’était délicieux ! It was delicious!
- On peut avoir la carte des desserts ? Can we have the dessert menu?
- L’addition, s’il vous plaît. The bill, please.
- On peut avoir l’addition ? Can we have the bill?
- Tu finis pas tes frites ? Aren’t you going to finish your fries?
- J’ai invité la voisine pour aller au musée. I invited the neighbor to go to the museum.
- Dépêche-toi, on va être en retard ! Hurry up, we’re going to be late!
3 - DEVANT LE MUSÉE – In front of the museum
- Sylvie va bientôt nous rejoindre ! Sylvie will join us soon!
- Bonjour, trois billets s’il vous plaît. Hello, three tickets please.
- Oh non, c’est fermé aujourd’hui. Oh no, it’s closed today.
- C’est bon, c’est ouvert le mardi. It’s okay, it’s open on Tuesdays.
- Il faut faire la queue. We have to queue.
- Il y a une réduction pour les enseignants ? Is there a discount for teachers?
- Il y a un vestiaire pour déposer nos manteaux ? Is there a cloakroom to leave our coats?
- Je peux prendre un audioguide ? Can I get an audio guide?
- Il y a une visite guidée ? Is there a guided tour?
- À quelle heure commence la visite guidée ? What time does the guided tour start?
- On peut prendre des photos ? Can we take photos?
- On va visiter l’exposition temporaire. We’re going to visit the temporary exhibition.
- La visite commence par là ? Does the tour start this way?
- J’adore cette artiste. I love this artist.
- Ça date de quand ? When is this from?
- C’est impressionnant de voir l’original en vrai. It’s impressive to see the original in person.
- Excusez-moi, où sont les toilettes s’il vous plaît ? Excuse me, where are the toilets please?
- On sort pour prendre le goûter ? Shall we go out for a snack?
4 - À LA BOULANGERIE – At the bakery
- Bonjour ! Je voudrais une baguette, s’il vous plait. Hello! I’d like a baguette, please.
- Je vais prendre un pain de campagne. I’ll take a country loaf.
- Vous pouvez le trancher ? Can you slice it?
- Je vais aussi prendre un pain au chocolat, merci. I’ll also take a chocolate croissant, thank you.
- Il vous reste des croissants ? Do you have any croissants left?
- Vous avez des sandwichs ? Do you have any sandwiches?
- C’est une tarte végétarienne ? Is this a vegetarian tart?
- Un éclair au café, ça te dit ? How about a coffee éclair?
- Je prends un chausson aux pommes pour Sylvie. I’ll take an apple turnover for Sylvie.
- Comment ça s’appelle, ça ? What’s this called?
- Ce sera tout, merci. That’s all, thank you.
- Je peux payer par carte ? Can I pay by card?
- Je n’ai pas besoin du ticket. I don’t need the receipt.
- Merci, bonne journée ! Thank you, have a good day!
5 - CONVERSATION ENTRE AMIS – Conversation with friends
- Salut, tu vas bien ? Hi, how are you?
- Coucou, ça va ? Hey, how’s it going?
- Ça faisait longtemps ! It’s been a long time!
- Ça fait plaisir de te voir ! It’s good to see you!
- Je te présente Sylvie, ma nouvelle voisine. Let me introduce you to Sylvie, my new neighbor.
- Quoi de neuf ? What’s new?
- J’ai beaucoup voyagé cette année. I’ve traveled a lot this year.
- Et toi ? And you?
- Tu es partie pour les vacances ? Did you go away for vacation?
- Tu fais quoi dans la vie, déjà ? What do you do for a living, again?
- Tu bosses toujours dans l’informatique ? Are you still working in IT?
- Je suis à la retraite. I’m retired.
- Je suis prof de français. I’m a French teacher.
- Tu vis toujours en Normandie ? Do you still live in Normandy?
- Comment va ta famille ? How’s your family?
- T’as fait quoi ce week-end ? What did you do this weekend?
- Je suis allée au restaurant, au musée, et même à la boulangerie ! I went to the restaurant, the museum, and even to the bakery!
